Director, Pasco County Animal Services
Mike Shumate has a great vision to make Pasco County Animal Services in Florida a premier animal shelter. He strongly believes that his county’s citizens and animals deserve nothing less.
Shumate joined Pasco County Animal Services as Manager in October 2013 and was promoted to Director in 2016. During his six years at the shelter, he has expanded its programs and services to the community while pursuing a program to achieve a 90% save rate for animals.
A veteran of the United States Coast Guard, Shumate has been in government service for over 38 years. He began his career in animal sheltering as the Administrative Coordinator of Greenville County Animal Care in South Carolina, which expanded into a full-service shelter with an annual intake of 22,000 animals, an adoption center, and a public wellness and spay-neuter clinic.
Mike is a graduate of St. Leo University where he received his Bachelor’s Degree in Human Resource Management. He also has a Master’s Degree in Public Administration from Troy State University.
